Ed's Blog Posts
Hello!
I deleted the other post because, well, I didn't say anything.
Well, not like this one says much more :P
Hello all!
I don't want anyone to think that nothing is going on with the site. Currently I am working on creating a list of links to other Othello sites. The links will be stored in a database instead of just being stored in a html file. This way, I c...
A minor addition to the links page.
You can now click on a category name in the links page to jump directly to the category below. The feature is more useful now that there are a lot more links than before :)
With Randy's permission, I have now stole the font used on Randy's blog (Palatino).
As you might have noticed already, the name of the blog is now "Othello Blog". Fitting, don't you think? :)
update: So much for the trailing slash fix. It was working yesterday and now it doesn't work. Oh well. So instead of fixing that, the top of the...
The Othello RSS page is up! It's located at http://knhjp.dyndns.org/othello/rss.php.
Currently I have the NAOthelloTourneys, Randy's blog, and this blog up on the page. (I am waiting for permission ...
Ever wondered how nbrowser works? You can finally read the documentation of it on the nbrowser page.
(For those of you who don't know, nbrowser is a program for browsing ntest's book)
As some of you might have noticed already, as the blog grows, it will become increasingly hard to find interesting articles written a while back.
Have no fear! There will be another way of viewing the blog. I can't disclose too much since the details hav...
I am happy to say that the new interface for the blog is here. It's operational, although the layout needs to be improved some more.
You can look at Ben's Blog Posts, Eddie's Blog Post...
Currently, I am working on a way to allow anyone to write an article on the main page. The public will also have the ability to edit those articles. I think it will be a good way for someone who doesn't want to be bothered by the tedious aspect of page bu...
It has been a week since I got the code working. I got "a little" caught up in the election so there was a delay ;)
The good news is that the pages *should* be fully tested.
Check out Othello Pages. To find ou...
As many of you have noticed, the site layout does not look very nice on Internet Explorer. I was doing all the spacing based on Firefox and it was frustrating to see that the two browsers were not matching up.
So I ended up using tables for the site la...
A combinatorial game is a game of two players. Two players (usually "Left" and "Right") take turn playing the game. Whoever runs out of moves first loses. That is, whoever makes the last move wins.
How does this concern the game of Othello? Well, there...
In light of what Ben wrote yesterday, I have more to add onto what he said.
As some of you may know, I am not very picky about who I play against online. I would play with provisionals if they sit. I understand I probably take a hit in terms of ratings...
As a practice for the upcoming US Open, I have been trying to predict ntest's moves. At 30ply, ntest takes a long time to come up with just one move. This gives me plenty of time to "figure things out".
I have been getting pretty good at it. In fact, I...
Chris has made a comment regarding blindfold Othello here.
It was commented after some newer posts were made, so maybe some of you didn't see that. I just wanted to point it out.
...
US Open will be held in LA in three days. Four of our blog posters, Eddie, Randy, Ben, and I, are expected to be there.
Ben just sent an email to the NAOthello mailing list informing us that he is sick. It seems like all the games he played in Japan wo...
Ben went back home already and did not play in this year's US Open. Albert is nowhere to be seen. Jacky said it's now too late to get a plane ticket.
Total of seven players showed up for US Open. They are Eddie, Randy, Yohanes, Christian, Jaime, Juan (...
I just drove back from Redondo Beach and I am extremely tired. Please pardon me if this turns out to be a poor post.
Going to the last round, I was ahead by one game. I played against Yohanes, who was second at the time. I was lucky enough to have many...
The word around the street says the next WOC will be held in Brazil, although it is not finalized yet.
Does anyone know when it will be held? What happens if Brazil falls through? How likely will actually be held in Brazil?
I'm writing because I am ...
Randy reminded me of GGS yesterday. What a great idea it was. I get to play whenever I feel like playing. It's probably also a great practice for an inconsistent player like me.
Since my endgame is far from perfect, I decided to play against a bot with...
I dropped by Kurnik a little bit last night, at 1:30am my time, to watch Tamenori play. I was a little surprised to see Tamenori lost parity.
Well well, I finally got around moving the website to a new server.
The connection should be much more stable now.
Oh yeah, if you see anything wrong with the site, let me know. I will do my best to fix it.
The following is the last Othello game I have played. That was 6 days ago. I played against Jacky as black. Jacky seemed a bit upset about his performance, although I think he was brilliant. I don't think I played bad neither. I was rushing Jacky to finis...
I thought this was pretty cool. I had a +4 win against OO7 at 18 empties, and I managed to hang on to the lead by winning with 2 discs. This is perhaps the best endgame I have done, under pressure :)
I have just been informed that Ian Turner is missing. You can find out more about this here: http://www.threadwatch.org/node/3008
Perhaps you can pass this information along. It may help reach the peop...
OO7 played an early x-square against me. The game turned out to be very interesting, but I will spare you with the part about how I screwed it up :)
Java programmers?
As you can see from the above link, we are currently looking for top-notch Java programmers. We already have three Othello players here, and the way I see it, the more the merrier....
After reading Ben's blog post about style, I felt like I had to make a post about Othello programs.
Somehow, there seems to be this common misconception that programs don't have a distinct style. Most of the time people speak of a "stronger" or "weaker...
White has just gone to e1, which is supposed to be a book draw. Take a moment and think about what you think the best move is...
Instead of me posting a bunch of games.. let me try something new. Let's look at the following position, black to move next:
